Recently I have been in a bit of a craft and making craze (maybe it has to do with all these presents I had to make for friends and family:-)) and noticed one of the reasons why I like working with fabric so much is because of the patterns on the fabric! There are so many variants and great effects you can create through them, I just love it. Especially when something beautiful is made with it.
So I thought I make my own patterns. I think what I created lends itself mainly to wallpaper patterns but I bet there are lots of other cool things where they could be used.
I had the help of a fantastic book called “Digital textile design” by Melanie Bowles. It’s probably really good for fashion students as it brings in the history and information needed to make great fabric and work with it and also has loads of very good tutorials on how to create it.
So I went and made my own repeating patterns, some more illustrational, some more decorative ornamental. The hardest bit was matching them up of course, but I got better as I went.
It takes a bit of practice to create a visually well arranged pattern, but it’s great fun! I want to make more and get better at it, but for now check them out in the Illustration section (under Potions, Marbles, Ropes and Wave). Hope you like it!
